SUNCAT Blog

SUNCAT is the Serials Union CATalogue for the UK research community.

SUNCAT is a free EDINA service enabling researchers, librarians and others to locate serials held in libraries throughout the UK. The catalogue contains information on both print and electronic serials, including journals, periodicals, newspapers, newsletters, magazines, annual reports and other publications of a continuing nature.

SUNCAT currently contains serials' information from over 70 UK research libraries, including the British Library and the National Libraries of Scotland and Wales. New libraries continue to be added to the catalogue on a regular basis.

New SUNCAT Team Member

Hello everyone!

My name is Celia Jenkins and I am the newest member of the SUNCAT team (having started here in October). My post is 'Bibliographic Assistant', assisting Moira Whitson with the processing of Contributing Libraries' updates and checking data conversions. I am now getting the hang of the data checking (using UNIX - which is a first for me), and am enjoying being part of the great SUNCAT service!
Before this post I was an Information Officer at the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC), working on the website and various electronic services, such as SCONE, CAIRNS and SLIR (see http://www.slainte.org.uk).
Before SLIC I was a Research Assistant at Loughborough University, working on the JISC 'Partnering on Copyright' programme - looking at copyright issues with regards to Open Access and digital repositories. I have always had an interest in electronic resources, so it is great to be able to work with the SUNCAT team.

Directory of Open Access Journals Added to SUNCAT

SUNCAT contains the serials' holdings of 67 UK research libraries, plus the CONSER database, the ISSN register and has recently added the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). The DOAJ is a comprehensive directory of scholarly open access journals, containing over 3700 titles. All journals included in the DOAJ are freely available and contain full text peer reviewed articles aimed primarily at researchers.

The addition of the DOAJ to the catalogue ensures that these free titles are made visible and accessible to SUNCAT searchers alongside any subscription electronic journals they have access to. SUNCAT searchers can find these titles interspersed in their search results or can choose to limit their search to these titles alone.

Discovery to Delivery at EDINA and Mimas (D2D@E&M)

D2D@E&M is a JISC funded one year project being managed by EDINA and Mimas. The purpose of the project is to enhance the user experience with discovery services, firstly by improving interoperability between services, secondly by introducing personalisation possibilities for the services and thirdly by providing users with a series of options to move to final access and delivery services. The improved facilities will be available via a Scholarly Communications website. The key services involved are SUNCAT (EDINA), Copac (Mimas) and Zetoc (Mimas). The different aspects of the Project are being designed in the light of comments, feedback etc. from groups of actual and potential users, including researchers and library staff.

The project started on 1st August 2008 and is due to be completed on 31st July 2009.

Further details are available at:

Expansion to MARC downloading service for SUNCAT Contributing Libraries

SUNCAT has just released a second parallel downloading service to complement the initial pilot service introduced last year. Contributing Libraries can continue to access the CONSER only records with their existing connection and configuration, but may now replace this, or add a second connection to the new service, which contains both CONSER and ISSN records and will gradually expand to include Contributing Libraries' MARC records. The CONSER only database will be maintained to provide libraries with quick and easy access to these high quality records, with the second service providing a more comprehensive coverage of records.

There is no charge for these services, Contributing Libraries can simply visit http://www.suncat.ac.uk/support/z-target-auth.shtml for details on how to set up the Z39.50 connection and start downloading records.

CONSER is the cooperative online serials cataloguing programme coordinated by the US Library of Congress. There are over one million high quality CONSER records on SUNCAT, with particularly strong coverage in current STM titles.

Each ISSN assigned to a serial publication is registered in the ISSN Register and with over one million ISSN numbers assigned, this database is one of the most comprehensive and authoritative sources for the identification of serial publications world-wide.

The facility is only available to SUNCAT Contributing Libraries and therefore a username and password is required to set up the connection. These details remain the same as for the pilot service and have already been sent to the primary SUNCAT contacts at each Contributing Library.

Contributing Libraries should contact the EDINA helpdesk at edina@ed.ac.uk if they need a reminder of their username/password, experience any problems setting up or using the service or have comments about the service.

SUNCAT and the UK Research Reserve

The SUNCAT team met up with the UK Research Reserve (UKRR) Project Manager, Jean Crawford, last week to discuss SUNCAT’s role in the UKRR, the UKRR’s future plans and how SUNCAT might provide greater assistance in Phase 2 of the UKRR.

The UKRR has just received £9.84 million in HEFCE funding to proceed with Phase 2 of the project which aims to preserve access to low use print journals in Higher Education by storing copies in the British Library and selected Higher Education institutions allowing the remaining participating institutions to dispose of their print runs, freeing up significant space and resource.

SUNCAT contains the journal holdings data of all of the UKRR Phase 1 libraries. Currently it is used as an initial check on where journals, identified by UKRR participants for disposal, are held in other UKRR libraries. SUNCAT also displays the UKRR flag on journal holdings where this is supplied by our Contributing Libraries.

Both UKRR and SUNCAT share similar aims regarding the quality of journal data. Both are keen to see records updated, particularly to include ISSNs where these are missing, to allow for the accurate identification and matching of records for the same title. In the UKRR this ensures that participating libraries can confidently dispose of titles in the knowledge that they are being stored elsewhere and in SUNCAT’s case it allows researchers to quickly identify the location of titles throughout the UK.

One area where SUNCAT may be able to assist the UKRR further is by providing them with reports of journals which are not widely held in the UK and can therefore be considered “at risk” even if they have not been formally identified for disposal by UKRR participants.

SUNCAT will also consider adding any new libraries which join Phase 2 of UKRR which are not already in the catalogue to ensure that SUNCAT continues to be a comprehensive search and location tool for the UKRR participants. However, any new libraries added to SUNCAT will continue to be considered on a number of merits asides from membership in the UKRR.

Other possibilities which were highlighted in the meeting were that of adding the UKRR as a Contributing Library to SUNCAT or providing a UKRR “view” onto the SUNCAT catalogue. This view would include only UKRR libraries and exclude any electronic only records, making the search, discovery and checking process more efficient for the UKRR participants.

Finally, another planned SUNCAT development, involving deep-linking from holding records on SUNCAT directly to the equivalent record on the Contributing Libraries own catalogues, was also discussed. Almost all of the SUNCAT Contributing Libraries are now updating their records regularly, with the majority on a monthly basis, but linking out to records would mean the most up-to-date holdings information would be easily accessible to UKRR participants.

Quick Survey of Inter-Library Loan Librarians

Last month we reported our attendance at a North West Interlending Partnership meeting in Preston, where we took the opportunity to conduct a quick survey with the participants at the meeting. We have now analysed the responses and the following is a short summary of the findings.

The North West Interlending Partnership provides Inter Library Loan (ILL) support services to libraries in the north west of England. It has a total of 32 partners, including 20 Public Library Authorities; 11 Academic Libraries and one Specialist Library.

  • 33% of the respondents had previously used SUNCAT as part of their (Inter-Library Loan) ILL workflow.

  • The remaining 67% all indicated that they would now consider using SUNCAT as part of their ILL workflow.

  • 76% of the respondents indicated that they would like more public libraries to be added to SUNCAT

  • 50% of respondents indicated that they would like more Higher Education and Specialist libraries to be added to SUNCAT

Respondents were also asked to rate the usefulness of five new or potential SUNCAT developments.

  • The recent development Listing the holding libraries on the result screen was the most popular development with 100% of the respondents rating this at the top end of the scale.

  • The second most popular development was Linking from SUNCAT holdings to the equivalent record on Contributing Libraries’ local catalogues with 86% of the respondents rating this at the top end of the scale.

  • The next most popular development was Linking from SUNCAT to Table of Content (TOC) services, e.g. Zetoc with 67% of respondents rating this at the top end of the scale.

  • Following this, Integrated presentation and access to SUNCAT, COPAC, Zetoc etc. had 57% of the respondents rating this at the top end of the scale.

  • The least popular development was the Integration with ILL request mechanisms which only 43% of the respondents rated at the high end of the scale.

These results were very encouraging for SUNCAT, demonstrating that we are on track with our new and planned developments, but should concentrate on developing deep links to local catalogues and to setting up links to TOC services. The results also highlight that it would be helpful to include more public libraries on the catalogue and to promote the service further to the ILL community.

SUNCAT presents at North West Libraries Interlending Partnership meeting

SUNCAT were invited to present at the North West Libraries Interlending Partnership meeting on Wednesday 14th May, in Preston. The presentation included an introduction to and demonstration of SUNCAT, as well as focussing on how the service can help Inter-Library Loan (ILL) librarians and researchers making ILL requests. As a freely available service SUNCAT is an ideal location tool for ILLs allowing librarians and researchers to view the holdings of 66 libraries in one search.

After the presentation SUNCAT held a short "surgery" along with the British Library and the Transport Provider (DX) where participants were able to ask more in-depth questions about the service.

There was significant interest from the participants who were keen to see SUNCAT include more public libraries, links to table of contents services, such as Zetoc and closer integration with ILL request mechanisms. We also carried out a short survey with the participants and will post the results of this shortly.

All in all this was a very useful and informative event for SUNCAT, allowing us to disseminate news to one of our key user groups while also gathering feedback which will help us to improve the service appropriately.

We are also happy to report that the journey back from Preston to Glasgow was somewhat quieter than the trip down, without the company of many thousands of Rangers fans!

Aleph Cataloguing Module subgroup meeting

Two members of the SUNCAT team attended the Aleph Cataloguing Module subgroup meeting at the British Library, St. Pancras on the 28th April. (Aleph is the LMS that SUNCAT runs on.)
It was a very useful day, encompassing a presentation on RDA (Resource Description and Access) and one on the British Library's batch loading processes.
The discussion following RDA raised many pertinent questions, including how Aleph will handle the changes to the cataloguing rules, which will become more FRBR-ised (FRBR = Function Requirements for Bibliographic Records). How records will be retrospectively converted to work in a FRBR-ised environment remains a question that is currently unanswered. RDA is a drastic change from the current bibliographic description rules; so much of a change that the Library of Congress' Future of Bibliographic Control Working Group has recommended that work on RDA be suspended until further testing of the FRBR model can be carried out.
The debate provided much food for thought for SUNCAT: for example, how will SUNCAT display records that are following RDA alongside records that are in MARC21?
Regarding the presentation on the British Library's batch loading processes, it was interesting to note that the British Library converts its data in a similar way to the method used by SUNCAT for processing data from its contributing libraries.

The next meeting will be held in a years' time. By then, the layout of RDA will be more established, so there should be a better idea of how it will display in different LMS, and how the cataloguing workflow will be altered. The theory is sound; the implementation needs further work.

OpenURL linking

We have added a "Find a Copy" button to the full record display on SUNCAT. The button leads users to their local OpenURL resolver and hence to options for full text access depending on their entitlement or to alternatives such as Inter-Library loan services at their local institution.

The button will direct users with no registered OpenURL resolver to the general resolver, GetCopy. In order for your users to be directed to their local OpenURL resolver please ensure that it is registered with the OpenURL router.

Web 2.0 day out

The SUNCAT team had a day away from updating libraries last week and travelled all the way across the road to the National Library of Scotland. The event was a seminar organised by the Cataloguing & Indexing Group in Scotland with a title which obviously appealed to the whole team:
“Toto, I’ve got the feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore”: metadata issues and Web 2.0 services.

The day included presentations on

  • Cataloguers using Web 2.0 tools for collective and collaborative working

  • Semantic web or Web 3.0

  • Wikipedia

  • Tagging (including some of the pitfalls and attempts to develop tagging guidelines)

  • Scottish Screen Archive on YouTube

  • National Library of Scotland on Flickr and Facebook

  • Scottish Library and Information Council encouraging communication and participation among the Scottish library and information community using a range of tools, including Del.icio.us, SlideShare and a Scottish Libraries Web 2.0 area on Pageflakes

All in all it was a very informative day for the team. It was stimulating to hear what others are doing and we left hoping to be able to add more Web 2.0 functionality to SUNCAT. In addition to this blog we currently use a wiki for collaborative team working and have created a SUNCAT search application for Facebook (see post on Feb 18) but we’d like to do much more…

Keeping SUNCAT up-to-date

To make sure that the serials' information on SUNCAT is kept as current as possible, we have been busy setting up regular updates from our Contributing Libraries. The updates contain details of new titles added to a library's collection or amendments to existing titles and also any titles which have been removed. We are now receiving regular updates from over half of our 66 libraries and are working with the others to ensure that SUNCAT is kept current. To check how up-to-date a particular library's data is or to check if your library's latest serials have been added please visit the updates page on the SUNCAT website. We will also start posting the latest updates, as they happen, on this blog.

Locations on SUNCAT

SUNCAT has made a change to the way results are displayed following a successsful search or browse on the catalogue. In addition to the serial title, author and year of publication information, a list of the libraries holding each title now displays on the results screen. This enhancement allows users to see at a glance which libraries hold a title, helping them to identify and filter records of interest more quickly. The full record display continues to contain more detailed location and summary holdings information. Let us know if you have any comments on the new display, either here, or by using the feedback link on the SUNCAT interface.

SUNCAT and WorldCat collaboration

The SUNCAT team recently held a teleconference with Janifer Gatenby and John MacColl from OCLC to discuss collaborating on a project to enhance discovery to delivery. OCLC have recently loaded 30 million articles into WorldCat and discussions led to the idea for a scoping study, using a sample of around 30,000 electronic serials. The aim of the study is to investigate joining up discovery to delivery including article level information and connecting to the wider content of a serial, including articles in the same issue or to related articles in other issues of the same serial. This will involve consideration of the creation of an electronic serials registry which would have the potential to be usable as a CLOCKSS and serials registry and/or as an authority file for the serials.

The group are also interested in investigating work related to FRBR and the clustering of material at work level. As a union catalogue, SUNCAT has experience of matching serials at work level, while WorldCat has done work on identifying work clusters. Collaboration would benefit both services, assisting the process of distinguishing different expressions of a work and their related metadata, clustering these at work level and hence reducing duplication.

A background paper is currently being prepared by OCLC and this will inform the next meeting to be held in March.

Pilot MARC record download service

Last month we released a pilot downloading facility for SUNCAT Contributing Libraries. The pilot service enables our Contributing Libraries to download a subset of SUNCAT records in MARC format via Z39.50. The records are from CONSER, the Library of Congress Cooperative Online Serials programme.

There are over one million CONSER records available and these are of very high bibliographic quality and are particularly strong in their coverage of current Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) titles. The records are free of charge to SUNCAT Contributing Libraries, enabling them to download records for newly purchased serials or to upgrade their existing serials records.

We are currently unable to offer the entire SUNCAT database of records in MARC format due to IPR restrictions imposed by a commercial supplier on records supplied to our Contributing Libraries. However, the SUNCAT team are investigating methods of filtering out these records so that we can offer a greater proportion of the SUNCAT database for download.

Details of how to set up and configure the Z39.50 connection are available at http://www.suncat.ac.uk/support/z-target-auth.shtml

Please contact the EDINA helpdesk with any comments or queries about the pilot service.
