New SUNCAT demonstration video

Another new short video is available on the SUNCAT website. It is a step-by-step demonstration of SUNCAT, highlighting the search options and how to view Table of Contents and access full-text articles of selected journals found via the service.

As mentioned in a blog post last month, there is also a short video available in which Natasha Aburrow-Jones, SUNCAT Project Officer, describes SUNCAT, including its coverage, functionality and features.

We hope both of these productions will help you get the most out of SUNCAT and also introduce and promote the service to users. If you have any questions about the videos, or the service in general, please contact the EDINA helpdesk at edina@ed.ac.uk.

Case studies demonstrate SUNCAT's impact

Three case studies have been added to the SUNCAT website. These highlight the impact that SUNCAT has had on the work of three different organisations:

- UK Research Reserve (UKRR): SUNCAT used to identify duplication of journal holdings, so enabling libraries to free up space
- North West Libraries Interlending Partnership: SUNCAT used to locate journal articles, hence increasing the supply rates of inter-library loan requests
- Loughborough University Library: SUNCAT provides bibliographic data for upgrading journal records, therefore improving resource discovery

Two new Libraries contributing to SUNCAT

The University of Bradford and the Royal Asiatic Society are the latest Libraries to have been added to SUNCAT. This makes a total of five new Libraries processed in 2011 so far, with the total number in SUNCAT now being 82, plus CONSER, ISSN and DOAJ.

The University of Bradford Library collection supports the research and teaching functions of the seven ‘academic’ schools, which each cover a broad range of specialisms: Computing, Informatics and Media; Engineering, Design and Technology; Health Studies; Life Sciences; Lifelong Education and Development; Management; and Social and International Studies. Just over 16,500 serial records have been loaded into SUNCAT.

The Royal Asiatic Society was founded in 1823 and received its Royal Charter from King George IV in 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. The Library contains books and journals on a wide variety of subjects concerning Asia, including the Middle East and, to a lesser extent, Islamic North Africa. The Collections include Persian, Arabic, Pali, Sanskrit, Malay and Javanese manuscripts. Most of the resources are in the area of the humanities. Sciences and ethnography are covered only peripherally. The Library has provided SUNCAT with just over 490 serial records.

New SUNCAT User Satisfaction Survey

Last year we asked you about your use of SUNCAT. We thank all of you who responded to this survey, with the results having fed back into the service. This year we are asking some slightly different questions and value any responses we receive so that we can continue to evaluate and develop SUNCAT to meet our users' needs and expectations. Feeback wanted on guide to integration of SUNCAT

BGS – now part of NERC

Records in SUNCAT listed under the British Geological Survey are now being loaded as part of NERC: Natural Environment Research Council. NERC incorporates British Geological Survey, Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and British Antarctic Survey. There are two non-UK locations for British Antarctic Survey (BAS) – Bird Island in South Georgia and Rothera in Antarctica!

One title held at Rothera is 'Annals of Glaciology'; two titles held in South Georgia are 'CCAMLR statistical bulletin', and 'CCAMLR science'. Luckily, you don't have to travel to either library to get hold of them, as there is another copy held in the BAS main library in Cambridge!

NEW - SUNCAT video

A short video is now available, in which Natasha Aburrow-Jones, SUNCAT Project Officer, describes SUNCAT. The video briefly covers what the service is, its coverage, functionality and features. Feel free to take a look and also point others to it who may not know about SUNCAT and the benefits of using the service. The video is also available on EDINA’s YouTube channel.

Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Edinburgh Merge

Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) has combined with the University of Edinburgh's School of Arts, Culture and Environment to form a new and enlarged ECA as part of the University. The ECA Library at Evolution House has now become a site library of Edinburgh University Library and so all the ECA’s serial records in SUNCAT now appear as Edinburgh University records, although they will have ECA locations.

University of Bath - now contributing to SUNCAT

Just under 38,000 serials records from the University of Bath have now been loaded into SUNCAT. University of Bath library holds both print and electronic journals to support learning, teaching and research across science, engineering, management, social sciences, and the humanities. This is our third new Contributing Library of 2011 and takes the number of Libraries to 80, excluding CONSER, ISSN and DOAJ.

Another SUNCAT Contributing Library - Queen Mary, University of London

SUNCAT is pleased to announce another new Contributing Library, that of Queen Mary, University of London. Just under 29,000 of the Library’s serials records have just been added, which cover the wide range of teaching and research activity currently undertaken by the University. Subject areas include humanities, social sciences, law, medicine and dentistry, and science and engineering.

SUNCAT welcomes the Institution of Civil Engineers

The Institution of Civil Engineers is SUNCAT’s latest Contributing Library, with just over 5,700 serials records having just been added. The ICE Library is the largest resource in Civil Engineering in the world and its collection is designated as being of outstanding national importance by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. The collection includes: major conference series such as the Soil Mechanics conferences, Earthquake Engineering conferences and Offshore Technology conferences; over 900 periodicals taken from all around the world; and major report series, such as TRL reports, CIRIA reports and Hydraulics Research reports.

Expansion of record downloading service

The SUNCAT downloading service has been expanded to provide a range of options available to SUNCAT Contributing Libraries. These include the choice of:

• Downloading MARC records from a database containing CONSER and ISSN records; and
• Downloading MARC records from a database containing all records from CONSER, ISSN, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and now 17 Contributing Libraries.

A printable guide of search tips, for cataloguers using the Z39.50 connection, is also available.

Please note that the above databases, supplying MARC records, are only available to SUNCAT Contributing Libraries. However, MARC records are freely available to view via the SUNCAT web interface. In addition, there is a free Z39.50 connection to SUNCAT available to anyone who wishes to access the records in Dublin Core XML or SUTRS formats.

New SUNCAT z39.50 server hostname

The SUNCAT z39.50 targets are now available at z.suncat.ac.uk. You may want to change your z39.50 configuration to point to z.suncat.ac.uk rather than newcat.edina.ac.uk to ensure continual access throughout the downtime tomorrow. See 'Downloading facility of MARC Records' and 'Free z39.50 connection details' for full details on how to connect.

Z39.50 Access on Thursday 30th June

This is a notification of some scheduled downtime on the SUNCAT Z39.50 service on Thursday 30th June. This downtime will only affect Z39.50 access to SUNCAT, not the web OPAC.

We hope to switch from newcat.edina.ac.uk to z.suncat.ac.uk shortly before the downtime so you may want to change your Z39.50 configuration to point to z.suncat.ac.uk, ensuring continual Z39.50 access throughout the downtime.

SUNCAT and Open / Linked Data

EDINA and SUNCAT in particular are starting to explore Open and Linked Data, and would like to ask for your help!

SUNCAT is funded by JISC (http://www.jisc.ac.uk/). JISC has been actively involved in Open Data, which has resulted in the Discovery Open Metadata Principles (http://discovery.ac.uk/businesscase/principles/). As a result of this, SUNCAT would like to be able to open up the data that is sent by Contributing Libraries. The Resource Discovery Task Force (http://rdtf.jiscinvolve.org/wp/) was instrumental in linking the opening up of data and SUNCAT involvement. Open bibliographic data offers the chance for librarians and, indeed, anyone, to reuse the data to build innovative services for researches, teachers, students and librarians.

A major first step in the process of making metadata fully open is obtaining the consent of the Contributing Libraries to allow EDINA to make the supplied serials data open, under an Open Data Commons Public Domain Dedication and Licence
(URL: http://www.opendatacommons.org/licenses/pddl/ ) with reference to the ODC Attribution Share Alike Community Norms (the set of norms are published at: http://www.opendatacommons.org/norms/odc-by-sa/ ). Please contact us for more details of the licence that we have drawn up. We would be expecting all Contributing Libraries who allow us to open up their serials data to sign this.

Once the data has been made open, we may be able to transform it into a set of triples, and release it as Linked Data. This is dependent on the time scale of the project, and the work that we are able to complete in that time.

We understand that there may be licensing issues with allowing EDINA to use all of the metadata that is supplied to us through regular updates to SUNCAT. However, it would be very useful to be permitted to use some or all of this data, such as letting us use records that you created originally, and did not download from an external bibliographic resource.

It must be stressed that this is exploratory project work. As we are working to a tight timescale, we would like to work with a limited number of Contributing Libraries in the first instance.

We would like to hear from you if you would be happy for us to publish some or all of your serials metadata under an Open Data Commons PDD Licence. Please contact us through the SUNCAT email (suncat@staffmail.ed.ac.uk).

New SUNCAT Google app

A Google application is now available which enables you to search SUNCAT directly from your iGoogle page or from any webpage where you choose to embed the app. Search options include keyword, title and ISSN. Further details and instructions on installing the app are available on the SUNCAT website. Contact the EDINA helpdesk (edina@ed.ac.uk) if you have queries regarding the app or SUNCAT in general.

SUNCAT at UKSG

SUNCAT will be present at this year’s UKSG Conference, to be held in Harrogate from Monday 4^th to Wednesday 6th April. Members of the SUNCAT team will be attending the seminars and other events throughout the three days. Please feel free to come along and talk to us at the Mimas/EDINA stand (stand number 32) at the Conference’s exhibition. In addition, Fred Guy, SUNCAT Project Manager, will be giving a presentation on the Piloting an E-Journals Preservation Registry Service (PEPRS) project as one of the Group A breakout sessions.

Open University – the latest SUNCAT Contributing Library

SUNCAT is pleased to announce that the Open University is its latest Contributing Library, with just over 35,000 serials records having just been added. The Open University is a distance learning and research university, with the main campus located in Milton Keynes. The Open University Library provides a wide range of print and electronic resourcescovering a range of subjects from art history through to sports science. Their print collection includes over 4,000 print journal titles, while they also hold more than 30,000 electronic journal titles.
