SUNCAT Blog

SUNCAT is the Serials Union CATalogue for the UK research community.

SUNCAT is a free EDINA service enabling researchers, librarians and others to locate serials held in libraries throughout the UK. The catalogue contains information on both print and electronic serials, including journals, periodicals, newspapers, newsletters, magazines, annual reports and other publications of a continuing nature.

SUNCAT currently contains serials' information from over 70 UK research libraries, including the British Library and the National Libraries of Scotland and Wales. New libraries continue to be added to the catalogue on a regular basis.

Using SUNCAT as an Aid to Cataloguing

SUNCAT provides a Z39.50 connection to high-quality CONSER and ISSN MARC21 records on SUNCAT, enabling our 70 Contributing Libraries to download these records to their local catalogues. This is especially useful when a library is embarking on a retrospective conversion programme. Information about the downloading facility is available on the SUNCAT website. Non Contributing Libraries are also able to consult the MARC records found in SUNCAT and can use these to aid their cataloguing. We are hoping to expand the download service, and are currently surveying our Contributing Libraries about the existing MARC21 records downloading service and how they would like to see this develop.

We now have more than 5 million bibliographic records in SUNCAT (both for print and electronic journals). Approximately 1.2 million CONSER records and 1.4 million ISSN records are available for download.

Contributing Libraries - Closures for Refurbishment

Two of SUNCAT’s Contributing Libraries are closed (or to be closed) for major refurbishment. The Royal Society’s Library and Archives are currently closed for renovation and will be re-launched in mid-2010 as the Royal Society Centre for the History of Science. As a result there is no access to its collections until at least June 2010.
Manchester Central Library will be closing in July 2010, due to re-open in 2013. The Central Library has to be completely emptied before work can begin and the stock (more than 22 miles of shelving) put into storage for the duration of the closure. The library will close in phases and the last department leaves the building by mid-June. An interim city centre library will be provided for the duration of the refurbishment period commencing Spring 2010. Stock from the Central Library will not be accessible during the closure period.
