SUNCAT links to Journals' Tables of Contents

SUNCAT has just introduced links to journals’ tables of contents (ToCs) using information provided by the ToCs service, Zetoc. This development results from work conducted on the Discovery to Delivery project by EDINA and Mimas.

The ToCs links appear on the SUNCAT search result screen and at the top of the full record display. Each link leads to the most recent issue of the appropriate journal title. Currently, there are ToCs links from around 20,000 journal titles, plus conference proceedings on SUNCAT, but this number will expand as new titles are added to Zetoc.

This is an important development for SUNCAT, instantly providing more information about journals on the catalogue. Article details from ToCs can assist users in distinguishing journals of interest, before establishing their location via the holdings information of the 70 libraries available on SUNCAT.

New libraries added to SUNCAT

The serials' holdings of two new libraries have been added to SUNCAT, bringing the total number of contributing libraries to 70, plus the CONSER database, the ISSN register and the Directory of Open Access Journals.

Stirling University Library is the eighth Scottish higher education library to be added to SUNCAT, joining Aberdeen University, Dundee University, Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh Napier University, Edinburgh University, Glasgow University and St. Andrews University. Stirling University is currently contributing around 36,000 serial records.

The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Library joins three other medical libraries on SUNCAT, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal Society of Medicine. The NIMR serials collection covers subjects such as neuroscience, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and biophysics, structural biology, developmental biology, immunology, parasitology, virology and microbiology. Initially NIMR is contributing around 3,000 serial records.

Results of user impact & satisfaction survey

We conducted an impact and satisfaction survey on SUNCAT in April 2009. The majority of the respondents were library or information professionals but there were also responses from a small number of researchers, lecturing staff and postgraduates.

Responses confirmed SUNCAT’s primary purpose as a serials location tool with around two thirds of the respondents using the service to find where specific serials are held in the UK. Other purposes included:

• Checking if specific titles are held in particular libraries, cities or regions
• Checking the bibliographic details of serials
• Using SUNCAT records to improve or create local library serials’ records

Specific examples of usage also highlighted that SUNCAT regularly saved library staff time and money when trying to locate serials.

“SUNCAT is invaluable in helping me locate libraries that hold journals when British Library is unable to satisfy ILL requests. SUNCAT is my first choice for serials location checking. It is easy to use and has exceptional coverage. I use it daily to trace journals and correct reference information. It has speeded my work up tremendously since it's introduction and I'd be lost without it.”

Desirable improvements or developments for the service which were highlighted included:

• Addition of more contributing libraries
• Reduction of duplication on the catalogue
• Linking from records on SUNCAT to equivalent records on libraries’ local catalogues
• Linking from SUNCAT records to Table of Contents services, e.g. Zetoc

Potential Web 2.0 developments received little support from the respondents but there was interest in personalisation features. The most popular of these were:

• Saving records across sessions
• Saving searches across sessions
• Location based results based on users’ preference settings.

A number of these improvements are already in development. The team are gradually catching up with adding a backlog of new libraries data to the catalogue and hope to add more new libraries in the near future. Linking SUNCAT records to Table of Contents services is currently in development as part of the Discovery to Delivery project and location-based searching on SUNCAT is also being investigated as part of the JISC IE Personalisation project .

Finally, 92% of respondents indicated their overall level of satisfaction with SUNCAT as “Good” or “Excellent”.

This is excellent news for the SUNCAT service, with high levels of satisfaction for the existing service and positive support for developments in progress. The team realise, however, that there is still much work to be done to try and ameliorate the effects of duplicate records on the catalogue while also adding more new libraries to further improve the coverage and value of the service.

SUNCAT at UKSG (II)

Last week, two SUNCAT team members (Natasha and Moira) attended the UKSG annual conference in Torquay. This was a fascinating three day meeting, covering anything and everything to do with serials and e-resources. It was also a chance to meet up with some of our contributing libraries’ representatives on a face-to-face basis.

As far as the plenary and breakout sessions were concerned, the highlights included a talk by Joseph Janes from the University of Washington Information School, who commented that an environment which looks familiar, but is slightly off-kilter, is highly disorientating; referring this to scholarly communications, he said that comfortable territory was being left behind in the march forward, but that the future is not yet an alien landscape. However, the serial as it exists now is evolving, and that has to be accounted for in library practices.
Three sessions on e-books were also interesting. One session of note concerned the JISC national e-books observatory project, which concluded that e-books which were free at the point of use did not have a significant impact on print sales. Moira particularly liked these sessions, as she likes to keep abreast of developments in e-resources as a whole, not simply serials, and so found them useful.
Both Natasha and Moira appreciated the talk by Jill Taylor-Roe from Newcastle University, which considered the current economic climate and the “Big Deal” packages offered by publishers. It was interesting to note that a number of libraries are considering cancelling their Big Deals to concentrate on more specific journal titles.
A highlight for Natasha was the breakout session offered by Dave Pattern, from the University of Huddersfield, which illustrated how Web 2.0 can infiltrate the library OPAC to give increased functionality and usability.

However, the high point of the conference had to be the infamous UKSG quiz – with EDINA representatives on the winning team!

Next year, the UKSG annual conference is being held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. SUNCAT hopes to see some of you there!

Two members of the SUNCAT team, Natasha Aburrow-Jones and Moira Whitson, will be attending the UK Serials Group (UKSG) conference in Torquay next week, March 30th to April 1st.

Natasha and Moira will be attending the sessions (and no doubt the social gatherings!), but you will find them at the Edina stand at break times. SUNCAT duplication review

We conducted a survey at the end of last year as a follow-up comparison study to the duplication survey conducted with SUNCAT Contributing Libraries in June 2007. Since the last survey a number of changes have been made to SUNCAT in an attempt to ameliorate the effects of duplication on the catalogue. The aim of this survey was to ascertain if these changes had any significant impact on respondents’ experience and tolerance of duplication on SUNCAT.

The results from the survey with SUNCAT Contributing Library staff could not confirm any significant change in the level of duplication in SUNCAT, however, they did highlight that user perception of the issue had improved. In the original survey conducted in June 2007, respondents found 28% of the searches produced an unacceptable level of duplication, however in this most recent survey this figure was reduced to 15% of the searches conducted. Further, the percentage of searches producing an acceptable number of searches increased from 38% to 54%.

The original survey suggested that it would be desirable to reduce the number of duplicate records for each journal title to a maximum of three, but that a maximum of seven duplicate records would be considered workable by the majority of users. However, this latest survey suggested that a maximum of five records would be desirable but that anything up to around ten records might be considered workable.

This apparent improved level of tolerance for duplication in the catalogue is most likely due to the addition of the institutions holding each title to the search results display. This change dramatically reduced the number of records respondents had to enter to check a particular institution’s holdings for a title. Further, 80% of the respondents indicated that the change to the interface had made either a significant or major improvement to their experience of searching SUNCAT.

Overall this is positive news for SUNCAT, but we recognise that there is still work to be done in this area. The list of holding libraries currently displays in the order libraries were loaded into SUNCAT, however, as we would prefer these to display in alphabetical order we have entered a development request with our partners, Ex Libris. Improving pre or post search limits or filters would also be desirable.
